Nitrogen limitation reduces the performance of target plant species in restored meadows

چکیده

Restoring habitats degraded by intensive agriculture is challenging, and the resulting communities often have lower quality host fewer species than reference ecosystems. To improve restoration outputs, we need to understand what limits both establishment performance of target in restored populations. In this study, focused on grassland with regional seeds compared two herbs, Betonica officinalis Centaurea jacea, between We also measured plant functional traits environmental characteristics which parameters affect population performance. Individual plants were smaller populations, indicates reduced Leaves from populations contained more ?15N and, Betonica, less nitrogen higher C:N ratio, suggests that may be limited nitrogen. Nitrogen limitation all was further corroborated low N:P ratio bulk biomass. Centaurea, recorded massive herbivory damage likely species' meadows. summary, showed conspecifics sites, probably due nutrient imbalance (low availability) excessive damage.

Nitrogen fixation in restored eelgrass meadows

Biological nitrogen (N2) fixation is the primary input of new nitrogen (N) to marine systems, and is important in meeting the N demands of primary producers. In this study, we determined whether restoration of the eelgrass Zostera marina L. in a shallow coastal bay facilitated increasing rates of N2 fixation as the meadows aged. Rates of N2 fixation were measured in a system that had been devoi...

Ecological nitrogen limitation shapes the DNA composition of plant genomes.

Phenotypes and behaviors respond to resource constraints via adaptation, but the influence of ecological limitations on the composition of eukaryotic genomes is still unclear. We trace connections between plant ecology and genomes through their elemental composition. Inorganic sources of nitrogen (N) are severely limiting to plants in natural ecosystems. This constraint would favor the use of N...
